Exporting an Azure Database to On-Premises SQL Server

Exporting an Azure DB to On-Premises

Introduction
Hi, I’m going to show you easily how you can export “any” SQL Server database from Microsoft Azure to an On-Premises platform. I don’t think this steps are valid for a SharePoint Infrastructure (as the Content as Configuration Databases are stored in SQL Server itself), but it’s always a nice to know. In the meantime we don’t know what the vNext of SharePoint Online is, so it’s always good to know an export procedure from Microsoft Azure!

How-to
First of all authenticate yourself on http://portal.azure.com and check if you have any SQL Server Database under SQL Databases section. If not – like me –hit the as shown hyperlink to create a SQL Server Database on Microsoft Azure.

The wizard will ask you a few classic questions like, a name, the maximum size of your Database etc… Provide the following information and hit next.

Azure Database

Provide a Connection Name and a strong Password. Select a region and hit next.

Azure Database

And hooray, in a few clicks our SQL Server Database under Microsoft Azure is ready. I know we are very fast, this database contains “NO DATA” but as this is a Proof of Concept, it can be empty. To continue, hit on the Database.

Azure Database

I’m not going to explain what all you can do with your freshly created SQL Server Database but at the end of your page, you can see the export button. Click on it.

Azure Database

Again – as usual – at the wizard, provide the information that Microsoft Azure needs to export your Database. When finished hit Next.

If you want to export any database from Microsoft Azure to On-Premises, you need a 3th party tool to accomplish this. I’m using a tool named “CloudXplorer”; if you have another one, please feel free to use it. If not, download, install and open it. Click on accounts and select Azure Blob Account.

Azure Database

As you have guessed, we need some credentials to access our storage. Navigate to Storage on Microsoft Azure and select on your Exported Database. At the end of the page hit first button to manage your Access Keys.

Azure Database

Now, you need to copy the Name and the Primary Key to access your Database in Azure. If you don’t like the key, you can regenerate a new-one by hitting the green button. Paste the key and name to CloudXplorer.

You can now download a local copy of your Database to your On-Premises Server.

Azure Database

Launch you’re SQL Server On-Premises and select the import option.

Azure Database

Provide the local patch to your backup.

Azure Database

Leave the default settings or change them by your governance. Everything should be on success for the import operation otherwise you need to check why.

And finally, you can see your Database that has been copied from Microsoft Azure to your On-Premises Server.
