The search engine in the company
Foremost there is the content; it is through him that everything begins. Such an infection in the information system, it multiplies, spreads, invaded all parts of the system. Then it embeds itself, and moves when you think he is gone we realize that it never dies. Soon users are suffering from a disease: “Searchite” acute. They search tirelessly, continuously, but cannot find or just what they need. And this time to search and navigate the maze of directories is a huge loss for the company, a mess. As well as sesame is finally located, the user does not have the certainty of having the latest version of this content. To overcome this aberration there are tools “search engines”.
This article aims to draw up an inventory using the search engine company, but also my vision for the future of it. (While some aspects are not as futuristic as it sounds).
The need of a meetings calendar has pursued me to look deeper into SharePoint’s OOB calendars and the customization possibilities for this type of list. There are several content types available in SharePoint, which can be added to a list, but they do not appear in the UI interface (site content types). For the calendar list, besides the usual event content type, there are several others: Schedule Content Type which enables the calendar as a scheduler for the members of the site, Reservation Content Type, which enables the calendar to reserve from a list of resources, and provide a reservation/availability checkup for it. There is also a Schedule and Reservations Content Type, which provides both of the functionalities of the previously described content types. This was also the one I used in my solution.
I’ve always thought the word kill comes on a little strong, but at the same time… I think it gets the point across. I’ve been very big into mobile lately and SharePoint’s default mobile WAP interface is driving me crazy. About 5 months ago I wrote about some of my experiences: SharePoint For Mobile – Yes we can!
For those who are familiar with my background, you know I spent a year and a half of my Microsoft tenure with the team that built out the enterprise hosted SharePoint platform (we were called MMS), which is now the dedicated side of Office365 (formerly known as BPOS-D). One of the reasons I was interested in joining the team was that I could leverage my prior experience helping build a hosted collaboration platform from scratch (while at E2open). Many of the experiences the team went through in 2006 and 2007 I had already experienced back in 2001 to 2003, and unfortunately, the org was slow to learn from the experiences of its team members.
In most lists or document library in SharePoint 2010, you can use a button from the Ribbon bar to enable synchronization of the contents of that list or document library using SharePoint Workspace. This option, however we can also turn off, getting inside the page the settings of our list, and following this path operations: List Settings => General Settings => Advanced Settings and setting the “Office Client Availability” to “NO.” Like anything, we can choose that setting when using the object model or via Powershell.
