Category: General

Categories and tags are the two default taxonomies that we use at the European SharePoint, Office 365 & Azure Community website. By design, all posts must be filed under at least one category. As you can imagine, ‘General’ is where we can list almost any topics that is not filed under the other subject headings.

However, some subjects are wide and broad in subject and need to be included in our blog, but don’t quite fit under the existing taxonomies. Hence the ‘General Category’. Content covered can vary from a .NET Runtime for AOT to a SharePoint Conference North America Keynote Summary, Pulse Survey or monthly top SharePoint, Office 365 & Azure resources.

Six Degrees of Separation.” It was one of those catch phrases of the last 20 years. There are 6 degrees to Kevin Bacon, and those in Hollywood where you can connect him to any actress based on his work. Now the challenge I propose to you is to see if you can find someone active in the SharePoint Community anywhere in the world that is more than 3 degrees from me. In addition, going into a new community, find the leader and you’ll find the connection to the rest of the community. We are all about 3 degrees of separation and in many cases there is no separation, we are at 2!

If you have been to this blog before then you will know about how much use I make of InfoPath 2010 and that one of the major uses for where I work is our Academic Review day. Its a program of interviews with students and their parents that happens twice a year.

We had a meeting today to discuss what we should do prior to escalating a ticket to Microsoft. There’s obviously a lot of troubleshooting that Tier 2, Tier 3, and Engineering should do prior to an escalation to Microsoft, and all of that due diligence, but I wanted to put together an escalation checklist that goes beyond it. As my regular readers know, I’ve been traveling a lot this year. I’ve now been home for two weeks, which is more than the last two months combined. Being away from home so long, I’ve neglected the infrastructure of my home office and of the tools I use on the road.

The last time I did a “tools I use” column, I got a tremendous amount of positive feedback, so I thought I’d summarize some of the current and upcoming changes in my own technology stack, for whatever insight it may provide to readers. So we’ll look inside my home office, inside my carry-on luggage, and up to the cloud to see one combination of infrastructure that works for a seasoned road warrior.
