SharePoint introduced Feature Framework back in 2006 and it has been widely used to customise SharePoint deployments in on-premises and in SharePoint online. Recently SharePoint engineering has however started messaging that even though feature framework is fully supported, it is no longer the recommended option as a tool for deploying your customisations to the sites.
