SharePoint 2013 Branding Options & Opportunities

Once upon a time there was a branding solution – a few Master Pages and Page Layouts and other assets that were installed automatically to the SharePoint environment to create a consistent look and feel throughout the sites.
Maybe even too consistent, sighed the mobile user, using the full site on a small phone screen. Along came SharePoint 2013, its pocket full of new tricks. Suddenly, the options were plenty! What are Design Manager, Device Channels, Display Templates, Mobile Panels…? What have they got to do with the good-old-branding solution? And when to use them anyway? Or why?
