Most people think of AI as a handy personal assistant. It’s the tool you call on when you need a quick answer, a summary or maybe a first draft of a document. Helpful, yes, but a little distant.
This September, Microsoft shared something that changes that picture. With new updates to Microsoft 365 Copilot, AI is no longer just standing by to help individuals. It’s stepping into a much bigger role: becoming part of the team.
Microsoft calls this idea human-agent teams. Instead of waiting in the background, these new collaborative agents are present in the places where work actually happens, such as in your Teams channels, your meetings and even your SharePoint sites.
What’s Changing?
Imagine running a project in Microsoft Teams. Alongside your colleagues, an AI agent is there, following the discussion, highlighting the next steps and giving reminders about deadlines. It feels less like a tool and more like a project coordinator who never misses a detail.
In meetings, things get even more interesting. The new facilitator agent can propose an agenda, take notes and turn decisions into actions. We have all left a meeting wondering what exactly was agreed, but now AI can keep everyone on the same page.
Then there’s SharePoint’s new Knowledge Agent. Its job is to organise and tag content so that Copilot always pulls from the right information. When you ask a question, you get answers based on accurate and up-to-date files, not half-remembered links. It is like having a librarian built into your workspace, keeping knowledge neat and ready to use.
Why is this important?
- Routine tasks get handled automatically, so people can spend more time being creative and solving problems.
- Knowledge flows more freely, because information from chats, meetings and files is linked together.
- Thanks to Microsoft’s open approach, organisations and partners can build their own specialist agents that fit their industry or way of working.
In short, this isn’t about replacing people. It’s about letting AI take care of the heavy lifting so teams can do their best work.
Looking ahead
The facilitator agent is already available, while project and knowledge agents are still in preview. That means we are only at the start of this journey, but the direction is clear. AI is no longer just a tool we dip into when we remember. It’s becoming a teammate that helps us every day.
