Your Questions Answered by Jasper Oosterveld

The following questions and answers are from Jasper’s latest webinar with the European SharePoint Community.

Q: Will you get the yammer feed update from Yammer to SharePoint instead of SharePoint to Yammer?

This goes both ways. You can post an update from Yammer and the post can be seen in SharePoint. You can post an update from SharePoint and the post can be seen in Yammer.

Q: do you have any input on when we try to edit a .xlsx document in the browser, it does not allow you to edit the document in the browser if the document has got Macros, any thoughts on this?

This seems like a limitation of editing Excel documents with macro’s within the browser. Please see the following URL:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/web-apps-help/edit-a-workbook-that-contains-features-unsupported-by-excel-web-app-HA102540964.aspx

Hopefully it contains useful information for you.

Q: What about legal policies and regulations of the country if the customer wants to have SharePoint using Cloud instead of in house

I don’t have an answer to this question but hopefully the following URL is:

Q: How can you access apps in SharePoint 2013

In SharePoint Online the SharePoint App Store is enabled by default. The Global Office 365 Administror is the only person who can disable the store. The following article contains information about Apps in SharePoint On Premises:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fp161236.aspx

If you aren’t the administrator of your SharePoint farm and can’t work with the App store, my guess is that he or she turned it off.

Q: Do you forsee a time when core business applications (e.g. apps currently delivered by ERP) will migrate to a SP platform?

My best guess is that Microsoft ERP software is going to be integrated with SharePoint. Not sure about products such as SAP.

Q: What are SSO options for Yammer?

You have to configure this yourself when connecting SharePoint On Premises to Yammer:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn457819.aspx

Q: Can we use Yammer for on-premises SharePoint? if yes how. Please share sources if possible

Yammer is a Cloud service and you aren’t able to install a local version of Yammer. That’s why Microsoft needs to be clear about the future of their native Social features such as the Newsfeed. I can imagine customers would like to use the Social features but not Yammer. My advice is to wait for the SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas. I really hope Microsoft is going to give answer due that to issue. Otherwise you have to look into third party software such as NewsGator.

Q: SharePoint online and SharePoint using cloud – are these terms used interchangeably?

I hope I understand the question, SharePoint Online refers to SharePoint included in Office 365. SharePoint using Cloud can also be a private Cloud hosted by other companies then Microsoft.

Q: What is the improvement of yammer feed in SharePoint 2013 compared to what we have in SharePoint 2010?

I haven’t worked with the Yammer Feed in SharePoint 2010 so I can’t judge if anything has changed.

Q: What should companies use instead of Yammer, if they are not allowed to “store” information outside the firewall?

You have to look into 3rd party software such as NewsGator. I don’t advise using the native SharePoint 2013 Social features. The future is very uncertain for these features.

Q: H We are currently using SkyDrive which is part of our on-premise SharePoint 2013 Farm. Currently we are using IPAD devices for our users. Currently it is not possible to connect with the SkyDrive App to an on premise SharePoint 2013 farm. Do you have any ideas solutions to provide a Sky Drive App, so they can connect to their SkyDrive?

Looking at the fact that SkyDrive is renamed to OneDrive I hope an update to the App is available after the SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas. If this isn’t the case you could look into 3rd party apps such as SharePlus.
