Why We Wrote SharePoint RBS For Dummies

Since SharePoint 2010 was released, there has been a tremendous
amount of debate regarding the value and application Remote BLOB
Storage (RBS) with SharePoint. However, I witnessed firsthand a
staggering amount of misconceptions about RBS during last year’s
SharePoint Conference in Anaheim. This wave of incorrect and
factually untrue information worried and disturbed me. How can
there be a proper debate about RBS when many are unaware about what
RBS actually means and how it can be implemented within SharePoint
2010?

From that week in Anaheim came the idea to educate and provide
correct, accurate information about RBS. Thus was born the creation
of
SharePoint RBS For Dummies.

Along with co-authors Ken Withee and Dr. Steve Marsh, Director
of Product Marketing, EMEA, for Metalogix, we set to put these
incorrect facts to rest and provide
a true representation of RBS. We wanted to share the critical
information people need to know about
SharePoint storage optimization
, their RBS provider options,
the benefits of using RBS
with SharePoint
and the importance of storage and backups.

We are currently experiencing a content explosion, as the amount
of content being created and consumed has reach levels thought
unimaginable only a few years ago. With SharePoint established as
the de facto standard for content management, a majority of this
content is now being stored and collaborated on within SharePoint.
The question for SharePoint administrators becomes: How do I
prepare my environment to handle this rapidly growing content?

There are a number of different options and strategies for
tackling the content explosion within SharePoint. The goal of this
book is to detail how utilizing RBS for SharePoint fits within the
technologies that make up a SharePoint environment, such as SQL
Server.

We will have copies of the books available at several of our
upcoming events. And over the next couple of weeks, we will be
writing more blog posts about the book.

We hope that by reading this book, you will gain more knowledge
about RBS, understand its different aspects and use that knowledge
moving forward to make informed decisions about the future of your
SharePoint storage.
