I woke up late on this New Years Day to find a renewal email waiting for me from Microsoft letting me know that I am once again a SharePoint MVP – my second year. I’d like to thank everyone for helping make this possible – for the various event organizers for continuing to select my abstracts to speak, for the folks who come to my sessions and read my articles, to my team at Axceler for supporting my workaholic behaviors, and of course to Microsoft for once again giving me this opportunity to participate in a great community of experts and thought leaders in the SharePoint space. I look forward to continuing to give back to the community for another year.

One of the great things about traveling for my job is that I get more time to catch up on reading while traveling than I often have sitting at home. On a recent trip from Seattle to New York City, I was reading through a Harvard Business Review article on our current recession, and the impact on the technology sector. The article presented an interesting idea which correlates, I believe, to patterns in many SharePoint deployments: increasing productivity without increasing demand leads to resource disparities, to which many companies compensate by decreasing headcount – instead of retooling and reusing those people. That is my theory, anyway.

When I joined Microsoft in 2006, it was at the tail-end of SPS2003, and organizations were preparing to make the move to MOSS2007. My team (which changed from MMS to BPOS-Dedicated to what is now Office365-D) was responsible for migrating internal Microsoft environments to the new platform, as well as building out a hosted platform for external customers. What was interesting about joining the company at that time was seeing the change in focus around content and community interest.
