SharePoint 2010 Upgrade is not over yet. While some estimates recently put it at 50% I get a different picture from my recent visit to Bulgaria. I had a nearly full theatre room with those interested in SharePoint 2010 upgrade. There are still a number of customers waiting and looking at SharePoint 2010 and trying to decide when they should do it. I have done a number of posts on Why Upgrade to SharePoint 2010 both for IT and Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Upgrade for End Users. Any post on issues in 2010 or browser and ActiveX controls should not discourage you. It’s definitely worth it.

In a previous post I shared some thoughts regarding changes to authentication providers in SharePoint 2010. As I worked through the issue of removing Claims/FBA and reverting to NTLM I discovered a number of issues that manifested themselves in strange ways. The first problem I encountered was the inability for a Farm account to make changes to the Authentication Providers settings in Central Administration. The System Account couldn’t even view the dialog – each attempt resulted in a 403 error. This was bad news as a lot of things happen behind the scenes when changing authentication settings in this dialog – not the least of which is propagation of changes to all the web servers. This meant I would have to undo all of the Claims settings manually and repeat them on each server. Not my idea of a fun afternoon.

One of the most powerful features of SharePoint 2010 is its search capability. In addition to being able to search entire site collections for pages, documents, and list items, SharePoint users can take advantage of a customizable feature of search called search “scope.” Learning to use search scopes effectively will save you a lot of time, especially within intranets that have tens of thousands of items for you to sift through.

The MTC organization has long utilized SharePoint to provide a central home for its documentation and partner-related information, as well as a portal for team-wide collaboration. After the release of SharePoint 2010, the MTC sought to migrate its content and data from its SharePoint 2007 environment to a Microsoft IT (MSIT) hosted instance of SharePoint 2010. Quickly, the migration team at the MTC knew that they could not migrate the data stored in SharePoint 2007 directly to this environment due to restrictions on custom applications in the hosted service.

Finding the right information has long been a major challenge for companies. Overall, an information Worker spends an average of 26 per cent a day looking for information. That implies a lot of potential in optimizing the process of search. Search technologies aim to solve this problem. Unfortunately search results are mostly below expectations. The reason is not the search technology per se, but the quality of data to be searched. The following topics cause considerable problems:

Knowledge is not explicitly available. Important information is not explicitly captured but available in various documents.

While attending a major ECM conference earlier this year, it was obvious that Box.net had decided to use the event as their “coming out” party. Box.net is a cloud content management company that is positioning itself directly against SharePoint 2010. In fact, they are claiming that 73% of Fortune 500 companies are already using their service.

On their website, Box.net invites people to compare the cost of SharePoint to Box.net through the use of a simple calculator. So being the inquisitive type, I decided to give it a try!
