Top 3 Tips for Managing Office 365

Learn PowerShell

Even if Microsoft 365 has quite a few admin centers to control services, not all of the possible configurations are available via the User Interface.  A lot of settings get shipped first via PowerShell, and are later maybe available in the admin centers, but a lot of them remain PowerShell exclusive. You need to learn PowerShell for Office 365 in order to get full control of your Office 365 tenant.

Don’t turn everything off

A lot of administrators tend to turn off things they aren’t sure how to use or how to control.  Don’t forget Office 365 offers multiple controls to allow you to turn things on, but still keep an eye on them and only open as much as you’re comfortable with. Remember that even if you turn off the feature in Office 365, if the business need exists, users will find a way to do it, and that’s when they start using other tools not sanctioned by IT!

Learn about security features in Microsoft 365

You do not have to be a  M365 security expert mastering everything, but whether you’re just a SharePoint Online Admin, or a full Office 365 Global Administrator, try and learn a bit on all of the security and compliance options available outside of Office 365, in the Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS) suite.  This will allow you to present opportunities to business leaders on how to make the organization more secure, without slowing down productivity and locking down features.
