It’s no surprise to data enthusiasts that Microsoft Fabric is shaping the future of data platforms. This powerful tool is not only popular but also dramatically shifting market dynamics. In this article, we will explore the out-of-the-box features of Microsoft Fabric that help you seamlessly integrate your data into OneLake.
The Power of OneLake
Imagine OneLake as the OneDrive for all your data. It’s a centralized storage solution where you pay for the storage, not the complexity. OneLake is designed to be the single location for your entire organization’s data. All data in OneLake is stored in Delta Parquet files, whether it’s a LakeHouse, Data Warehouse, or semantic model.
Simplified Data Integration
One of the standout features of Microsoft Fabric is its ability to integrate data without complex ETL processes. Typically, data engineers rely on ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tools like SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Stitch, or AWS Glue, which require technical expertise and can be costly. Microsoft Fabric simplifies this by providing all the necessary tools to move, connect, and mirror your data out of the box.
Mirror Your Databases
Microsoft Fabric has amazing feature that mirror your databases without any complex configuration, whether they’re on Azure SQL Database or any other cloud platform. This mirroring is near real-time and supports Change Data Capture (CDC), making it easy to synchronize your data without complex connectors or ETL processes. It even supports Cosmos DB mirroring. Imagine the possibilities of bringing data from operational sources, IoT databases, and Snowflake, and then combining it with your data warehouses for real-time analytics in Power BI. Isn’t it amazing and easy!
Important: The database mirror feature is still in preview, and Microsoft is planning to launch support for on-prem SQL Server and MongoDB in CY 2024.
No Physical Data Movement? No Problem!
If your data is on another cloud platform and you don’t want to move it to Microsoft’s cloud, you can create shortcuts in OneLake. For example, if you have data in an Amazon S3 bucket or Google Storage, you can create a shortcut folder in OneLake. This folder acts like a native data folder, allowing you to perform operations on the Amazon S3 bucket data as if they are physically in OneLake.
Your source system doesn’t give you access to the database!
If your source system doesn’t give you direct access to its database, you can still bring this data into Microsoft Fabric using the Microsoft Fabric Data Factory. For example, Oracle NetSuite doesn’t expose its database directly, but with Data Factory, you can fetch data from its APIs into Fabric without incurring additional pipeline costs.
Files and Folders!!!
Whether you have Excel files, CSVs, text files, or Parquet files, you can easily bring them into Fabric. The OneLake Desktop app allows you to move files and folders with the same ease as using OneDrive. Regardless of the file type, it will be stored as a Delta Parquet file, ready for querying and usage across different methods like Data Warehouse, LakeHouse, notebooks, or semantic models.
Microsoft Fabric is revolutionizing data integration and storage by offering a comprehensive, user-friendly solution. Its ability to simplify complex processes and support a variety of data sources makes it an invaluable tool for data engineers and organizations looking to optimize their data strategy. With features like OneLake, mirroring capabilities, and seamless file integration, Microsoft Fabric truly is your ultimate data magnet.
