Who can Create New Environments in the Power Platform

It is important to create multiple environment when you use the Power Platform, but how do you control who can create new environments?

Environments

There can be multiple reasons for creating multiple environments. Personally I like the Development, Test Production setup where apps and flows move from development through to test into production.

But there can be other reasons to create multiple environments. Some of the other reasons are:

  • Location
  • Teams environments vs Production/Sandbox environments
  • Security

And before you know it everybody will create new environments and your environment overview will look like a real mess.

How do we take control?

Create New Environments

The Power Platform admin center gives us the Power Platform settings. These settings have some useful governance options available.

There are two settings available.

  • Who can create production and sandbox environments
  • Who can create trial environments

The option of who can create Teams environments is unfortunately not there.

You might expect that when you select the Only specific admins that you would get to select the specific admins.

But, that is not the case.

So who can now create production environments? When you hover over the info-icon you will find out more.

And when you follow the link to the Control Environment Creation page things become a little clearer.

Once you have selected the only specific admins option you will find that only Global Admins, Dynamics 365 admins and Power Platform admins can create new environments.
