Display Templates, used in Search Results, Content Search Web Part and other search driven Web Parts to establish the visualization of the displayed data, are a combination of an HTML file and a JavaScript file. In order to create your own Display Template, you only need to modify the HTML file and let SharePoint handle the .js conversion. You can add your own JavaScript logic by referring to your own separate .js file in the HTML file.

So the cat is out of the bag thanks to Jared Spataro, Senior Director of the Microsoft Office Division. If you’ve followed my thoughts on Yammer vs SharePoint in the past, you would know that I was very critical of the “current state” of SharePoint 2013 and Yammer and also my comparison post. We made a decision at AvePoint to stick with SharePoint 2013 for “social” rather than look at the integration with Yammer which I explain here. After reading the direction that Jared had spelt out, I’m still happy with our decision as we are on-premises with SharePoint much like a lot of Enterprise customers rather than Office 365 SharePoint Online. It was great that they included some information around on-premises too at the same time rather than delaying answering.

In the past months I talked a lot about Document Management with SharePoint 2013. In my last session in Rosenheim there has been an interesting question. The scope of the standard Document ID provider that is shipped with SharePoint is ‘Site Collection’. In other word: to activate the Document ID you need to activate a Site Collection feature. What happens if you have two different Site Collections that use each the standard Document ID provider and you move a document (with a valid Document ID) from one Site Collection to the other?

I just finished reading Return on Influence by Mark Schaefer (his blog), which focuses a good portion of its pages on the rising importance of social scoring and, specifically, the Klout platform, and its potential impacts not only to corporate and professional marketing, but on the way we capture, analyze, and consume data about our many networks – whether they be networks (or circles) of customers, employees, partners, or friends. I’ll dive more deeply into the book itself in a future post, but want to instead capture a few of my key takeaways of this must-read for modern corporate enthusiasts.
