Barry Byrne

Major Barry Byrne is Chief Information and Knowledge Management Officer for the Irish Defence Forces, Headquartered in Dublin.   

Barry led an internationally acclaimed programme developing policies, procedures and technological solutions to improve Information and Knowledge Management in the Irish Defence Forces.  This project grew out of years of academic and empirical research conducted for his master’s thesis. The technical platform, delivered through SharePoint 2013 provides the complete intranet for the Defence Forces at home and oversea, plus full EDRMS capabilities, enterprise social, innovative knowledge management solutions, and has been recognised by international military and corporate organisations. The project team were recently awarded IT professionals of the year, Intellectual and Knowledge Management programme of the year and finished second in the best SharePoint Solution at the European SharePoint Awards. 

Barry has served in a variety of roles in overseas missions; Logistics in Liberia in 2006, chief ICT officer in 2007 in Lebanon and civil-military coordination and operations officer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2011. 

Barry has just completed a master’s degree in leadership and management during which he did a thesis on the topic of this presentation.
