A tool I really like is one from Lightning Tools. It’s a permissions tool, which doesn’t sound very exciting, but its simplicity is what I like about it. It allows you to report on permissions and also effectively manage permissions.
Lightning Tools produce a SharePoint permissions management tool which provides not just the IT department with permission management capabilities, but it also provides the business user with the permission management features that they require at Site, List, Library, Document and Item level. Below is an image showing a site permissions report which allows the user to see exactly how permissions were granted.
SharePoint out-of-the-box is very week in its permission reporting. The permission reports do not include all of the users with permissions leading you into a false sense of security. If users are granted permissions via Active Directory Groups or assigned permissions implicitly, they are not included. Limited Access is often reported when the user actually has a much higher level of permission. Using DeliverPoint, users with enough rights can produce reports which shows the full and accurate permission report which can be ran in context with sites, lists, libraries, and items without having to navigate away from the content.
Operations such as Copy, Transfer and Delete can help manage permissions in bulk. Imagine a user leaving your organization and being replaced! Using DeliverPoint, the permissions can be transferred at any scope (Farm through to Site) with a few clicks.
